The child-like androgyny figurines playing with chess pieces and sitting on concrete blocks are symbolic as it’s not actually themselves playing the ‘game’ and being in control. Their lives and fate is controlled and manipulated elsewhere behind the scene. The piece raises fresh questions about the corruption and political instability in China today.
